Research assistants are vital for the BRAINS lab mission and provide the volunteer with invaluable experience and preparation for graduate school. Research assistants with interest in EEG and other psychophysiology (e.g., SCR, EKG, EMG) methods are especially encouraged to apply. The Supervised Research Experience course (PSYC 3910) and volunteer research assistant (RA) experience allow for students with a range of research backgrounds, ranging from no experience to multiple years of experience training in other labs. RAs typically have multiple responsibilities:

Common activities for RAs:

• Reading and summarizing journal articles on relevant topics
• Entering data and learning statistical computer programs (e.g., SPSS)
• Participating in lab trainings (e.g., how to score rating scales, data collection trainings, etc.)
• Running participants through experimental procedures
• Creating research posters for conference presentation
• Weekly lab meetings

General Notes

• Students should plan on spending at least 9 hours per week in the lab. The more time you are able to devote to laboratory activities, the more useful your experience will be.
• Research assistants must be able to work in the lab for at least two semesters in a row (i.e., spring/summer, summer/fall, or fall/spring).
